Backend generate and save the report to local drive?
Any ideas on how to automatically generate and save the report to local
server drive backend when user click on certain link on the application?
The user do not have to render and display the report in frontend or click
on save button when prompted? The system should not prompt user for any
action instead.
Thanks in advance for any suggestion.Hi,
you can call the WebService of reporting Services (with optional
additional parameters, get the byte[] from the render method and save
this in a file on your network share of choice. That can all happen
behind the scenes and in addition if you want to asynchronously.
HTH, Jens K. Suessmeyer.

Back to Parent Report button not visible
When I preview a report that has a link to a details report page in VS a "Back to Parent Report" button is displayed. However, when I publish the report to the Report Server, the .aspx page doesnt display the "Back to Parent Report" button. Is there a setting I need to make to have the button displayed?
thanks, lance
The "back to parent" functionality in the HTML report viewer is achieved by clicking the browser's back button.
-- Robert
|||Well, this isnt the same functionality. Yes, the browser back button goes 1 page back. But the back to parent report, jumps back to the parent report no matter how many pages you have paged through in the child report. If I have a child report that has 20 pages and I scroll through all the pages by clicking next page, the UI you're suggesting requires me to click the back button in the browser 20 times. I could add links in every child report back to the parent report, but this requires embedded links. A "back to parent" report button should automate this process.
Is it possible to add the "back to parent report" button?
Thanks, lance
|||I concur. I need to add the back to parent report button as well.|||What do you think MSFT? Can this functionality be added easily and quickly (anytime before June 23, 2006 would be great)?
Thanks, -lance|||
Are you talking about viewing a report through report manager? In this case, the browser's back button will always return to the parent report, even if you clicked next page multiple times in the child report.
-- Robert
|||Yes, but thats a non standard UI. Most users are used to having a back to parent button (just as VS has) in order to automatically jump back to the original list page. When paging through a list of records, the back button usually takes you back a list page (see google).thanks, -lance|||
Ok. So it sounds like you want the browser back button to take you to the previous page (when paging through reports), and you want a separate "back to parent" button.
Once you jump back to parent, I guess you would expect that the brower's back button would then take you back to the previous page on the parent report (basically keeping the browser's pagination history information in sync with drillthroughs / back to parent jumps)?
Well, this kind of functionality is under consideration for a future release - but definitely not available in two days (by June 23rd) as you have asked earlier in this thread.
-- Robert
|||That doesn't appear to be the case when you add "interactive sorting" to the child report. One the table is re-sorted a number of times, the user shouldn't need to hit back n+1 times.|||Thanks for your help on this. I know there was a lot of back and forth about the behavior.
I know that people in my organization have asked for a back to parent report feature (i had to embed links to jump back to the parent report into all the reports) and it would be a beneficial feature.

From what I am seeing, the back button works well in IE6 to navigate up from a dill down in reports.
However, in IE7rc1 this is not the case. The back button does not work.
Is this a known issue?
thanks.
Chris
|||You have to click the back button twice with IE7 RC1 - this is a known issue.
-- Robert
|||Was this functionality released? Or is it still coming.|||I would just like to register that I am still interested in having a back to parent button available on the standard report viewer web page. It does not seem to have come with SQL 2005 SP2.

Back call without drillthrough report
I have a basic report that has a link to another report.
The first report loads OK then I click the link then the second report loads
OK.
But when I then hit the back button (the back arrow in the Reportviewer
Control) I get Back call without drillthrough report?
My control in aspx page:
<rsweb:ReportViewer ID="ReportViewer1" runat="server"
Font-Names="Verdana" Font-Size="9pt"
ProcessingMode="Remote"
Height="96%" Width="100%"
BorderColor="#ECE9D8" BorderStyle="Solid" BorderWidth="1px"
ShowBackButton="True">
</rsweb:ReportViewer>
my code behind:
string url = Request.QueryString["url"];
string path = Request.QueryString["path"];
if (!Page.IsPostBack)
{
ReportViewer1.ServerReport.ReportServerUrl = new System.Uri(url);
ReportViewer1.ServerReport.ReportPath = path;
}
Any ideas appretiated!The problem I have here only happens on some servers and not others. I
determind the diffrence between working and not workin servers is:
c:\windows\assembly\Microsoft.ReportViewer.WebForms
working servers have version 8.0.50727.42
servers with the problem have version 8.0.50727.762
Is there a way to downgrade Microsoft.ReportViewer.* assemblies? I try to
uninstall but not allowed. Maybe if I uninstall VS2005 and SP1 and
reinstall?
Thank you for any ideas!

>|||Hello Dev,
Based on my research, this is a known issue in ReportViewer Web control
after install the VS SP1.
The problem is the way the session keep alive ping happens. We ping each
session in the drillthrough stack to keep each one alive independently. But
the viewer http handler has logic to detect the following scenario:
1. User views main report
2. User clicks to a drillthrough report
3. User presses the *browser* back button
4. User performs an export/page navigation/another drillthrough/etc.
In the case of a browser back button click, the server doesn't know that
the user has moved back to the main report. So we have some information on
the url that tells the http handler that this request is for the parent
report (this is the reportstack=1 url parameter). As a result, the http
handler will unwind the drillthrough stack to the appropriate parent report
and continue processing.
The problem is that this reportstack parameter is also on the ping to keep
session alive. So immediately on rendering the page, the browser will now
ping all of the sessions. One of these is the root report, which eventually
unwinds the entire stack.
The only workaround is to not use ASP.Net session. The viewer can be
configured to not use session in server mode
(http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa983458(VS.80).aspx). This
problem does not happen in local mode because there is only one session
regardless of how many drillthrough occur - the ASP.Net session.
If you want to downgrade to the early version of the controls, please use
the gacutility to remove the dlls from GAC and then install the earlier
redistribute package.

AWE enabled on 64 bit system ?
Do we need to add the /PAE switch ?
Can someone send me the link that specifically talks about these settings on
a 64 bit server , if one exists ? ThanksNo
On true 64 bit Intel Itanium Processor based Systems, there is no need for
AWE /3GB or PAE switches.

AWE enabled on 64 bit system ?
Do we need to add the /PAE switch ?
Can someone send me the link that specifically talks about these settings on
a 64 bit server , if one exists ? ThanksNo
On true 64 bit Intel Itanium Processor based Systems, there is no need for
AWE /3GB or PAE switches.

beneficial: http://blogs.msdn.com/slavao/archive/2005/08/31/458545.aspx

Auto-Save to PDF
PDF) from a link on a web page.
I know how to setup the hyperlink to open the report directly in PDF
(without the user seeing 'Report Viewer') - however I actually want to just
save the PDF without user interaction!!!
A point in the right direction would be fantastic!
Regards,
Ryan.If you want to save the report (no matter in what format) on the server
side, as long as the web app's running user account has proper permission to
the saving location, then yes, it can be saved somewhere on server side. If
you want the report to be saved on user's computer silently, no, you cannot.
Every thing downloaded to browser (except for those used by browser, such as
cookies, that are saved in Internet temporary folder) can only be saved by
user's explicit permission. That is, server side code is not allowed to
silently save something on user's computer without user's acknowledge.

I do want to save server-side - so that isn't going to be a problem... i'm
just struggling to find a way of doing this 'programatically' when the user
clicks a link on an ASP webpage.
As in, the user clicks a link (then maybe using URL syntax) and a PDF
version of the report is saved server side to a specific folder... I don't
want the user to see the report (as in don't want it to open in Report Viewer
or PDF) - just create it behind the scenes.
...hope i've made sense there!
Regards,
Ryan.

web services to generate the report, render it in desired format and save
it.
I just write a peice of code to allow user to request a report to be send to
a given email address as an attachment. Here is the simplified code (note,
you need to add web reference to the reporting services' web services):
private void GetReportByEmail()
{
//Validate txtEmail for inputting
if (txtEmail.Text.ToUpper().StartsWith("XX"))
{
lblPrompt.Text="You must enter a valid email address!";
lblPrompt.Visible=true;
return;
}
if (txtEmail.Text.IndexOf("@.")<3)
{
lblPrompt.Text="You must enter a valid email address!";
lblPrompt.Visible=true;
return;
}
//Get report
TimeSheet.wdsg_svr003.ReportingService rs=new
TimeSheet.wdsg_svr003.ReportingService();
rs.Url="http://localhost/ReportServer/ReportService.asmx";
rs.Credentials=System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials;
string report="/WDTimeSheets/TimeSheetEmp/PayrollSummary";
string historyID=null;
string deviceInfo=null;
TimeSheet.wdsg_svr003.ParameterValue[] pmts=new
TimeSheet.wdsg_svr003.ParameterValue[3];
TimeSheet.wdsg_svr003.ParameterValue pmt;
pmt=new TimeSheet.wdsg_svr003.ParameterValue();
pmt.Name="EmployeeID";
pmt.Value=lblEmpID.Text;
pmts[0]=pmt;
pmt=new TimeSheet.wdsg_svr003.ParameterValue();
pmt.Name="FromDate";
pmt.Value=DateTime.Parse(ddlFrom.SelectedValue).ToString("yyyy-MM-dd");

Sorry to be a pain... but what language is your code? (it looks like
Javascript to me...however thought it would have to be ASP / ASPX or
something server side).
I am a novice - so sorry for stupid questions!!!

server side (reporting server), hence the ASP.NET.
