Backing up a restoring or standby database

Hi,
I would like to backup a secondary log shippping database (in restoring or
standby mode). I need to use the backup as an up to date test database on the
same server but don't have the bandwidth to copy the primary backups over.
I've tried the backup command which results in an error saying that the
restore sequence must be completed first.
I also tried detaching the database with a view to copying the files but
when attempting to attach it again sql server produced another restore
sequence error.
Anyone know if it is possible to do a backup of a log shipping secondary, by
foul means or fair?
Cheers,
Kev.
You'd have to use recovery to be able to do the backup but this'd invalidate
the log-shipping chain. for a test database you might roll your own 'database
shipping' solution which is something a few people on this newsgroup seem to
be using...

back log dbname with no_log

Hi,

I'm issuing the following statements to reduce the size of transaction log, My database is in simple recovery mode:

CHECKPOINT

GO

backup log TMDATABASE with truncate_only

go

dbcc shrinkfile (TMDATABASE_Log,2)

GO

The log file size still remains the same. Even though there are no active or open transactions...

Any insight greatly appreciated....

Thanks,

Razi

Perhaps the Log file is at either its defined size, or there is no free space.

These are useful sources:

FileSize -Log file filling up

FileSize -Log File Grows too big

Also refer to Books Online, Topic: 'DBCC ShrinkFile'.

The File Does Not Shrink

If the shrink operation runs without error, but the file does not appear to have changed in size, verify that the file has adequate free space to remove by performing one of the following operations:

Run the following query.

SELECT name ,size/128.0 - CAST(FILEPROPERTY(name, 'SpaceUsed') AS int)/128.0 AS AvailableSpaceInMB FROM sys.database_files;

Run the DBCC SQLPERF command to return the space used in the transaction log.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply but my log is still not shrinking. I tried using

"DBCC SQLPERF(logspace)" which shows Logsize = 499.875 and Log used = 0.04083052 0

This database in under compatibilty mode 80.

Also tried altering database file sizes using the GUI and ALTER DATABASE command but that didnt work since the initial size was larger.

There are no current connections to the database. Any insight?

Razi

Auto-print a report in 'local' mode?

Hello,
Is there a way to auto-print a report without any user interaction?
We're using 'local' mode with the reports embedded in the application;
there is there is no reporting server.
At the moment, a button on a form opens another form which contains a
ReportViewer control. This report viewer control is populated with a
report at runtime, and the report is displayed to the user. Very nice.
Now, the requirement is for that button to automatically 'print' the
report. (Thus saving the user the manual process). Is this possible?
I know there has to be some way to tell it which printer to print to.
Done some searching and there doesn't seem to be an easy answer. There
are ways, but they involve a reporting server to be present.
Any hints or ideas would be great.
Thanks,
Jackyou might try this: http://forums.asp.net/p/516455/533549.aspx

Thanks for the info, but this seems to be for 2000 (I'm using RS
2005). Not only that, this is using the 'server' mode, whereas we're
using 'local' mode.
Any other ideas?
Cheers heaps...
