Background water mark
beneath report content.
Any ideas on how to do this are welcome?
All the Best,
GHello Joe,
Reporting Services doesn't have a specific way to produce watermarks, but
you can create them manually.
Watermark at the printer level
Look at the capacities of the printer driver you use to create a paper copy
of the report. Many printers, even low-end ones, have the ability to add
watermarks as part of the print process. This is usually defined in the
printer driver's settings. It can be configured by creating a separate
instance of an existing printer driver and then configuring that instance
to add a watermark to all output. Adding another instance of a printer
driver does not take much system overhead, so this is economical and
convenient. To produce the watermarked edition of a document, just print to
the right instance of the printer driver.
Watermark at the report level
If you want to add the watermark on the report level, there are a few ways
to do this. You may simply create a bitmap with the appropriate watermark
on it and set that as a background image for the header, body or footer of
the report. Another approach would be to create a textbox behind the report
grid and place the needed watermarking there. In both cases, you would
probably need to set the background for all cells on the grid to
"Transparent" so that the background items would show through; any colored
items (even if they use white) would overprint the image.
Another possibility is to create a textbox for the watermark, make the
background of that textbox transparent, and bring it to the top of the
Z-order for the report, so it remains on top of everything else.

Thank you for the definitive reply, I have noticed that Report Services
does not like to place other objects on top of Image components.
Setting up additional printer definitions would be easy, however it would

Background replication
We are developing a embedded system based on Windows CE 5 and SQL Server CE 3 in C++ where we need to do merge replication in background while the front end application still need to perform operations on the database. A solution would be to run the merge replication on a separate thread while the application thread still can access the database to do inserts and updates. I have been researching if it is possible to access the database with queries during a merge replication, but I can not find an answere. Does anyone have experience of this and generally know if it is possible to implement with SQL Server CE 3 in the native API?
Best regards
Johan Johansson

Background images won't show when exporting to Excel
I have a table with several cells that contain a value. Also for those cells
there's a specific background image, which is displayed depending on the
value contained (displayed) in the cell. Everything works fine, but when I
export the report to excel the background image is not displayed, only the
value.
Is there any way to achieve this ? (display and background image along with
the value?)
Is this a Excel's limitation or is it Reporting Services' ?
Is there any work around ?
Will the RS SP2 add this feature ?
Thanks in advance
CesarCesar;
this is an Excel limitation and backgroup images are not supported.
Unfortunatelly, there is no work around I am aware of.

background images and external URLs sorting problem
the background image of the header (i.e. to brand the report with the company
logo).
this works fine until I use the interactive sort function which causes the
image to disappear. refreshing the report brings back the image, but resets
the sort.
Does anybody know of any way to make the image reappear after using the sort?
thanks in advance!

Background image sizing
I have a jpg image to use as report background. How can I strecth the image in order to fill the page background (i'm using PDF output) with my image ?
Thanks,
PierreIn report designer, go to the properties editor window and select "Body" for the report body from the drop down list.
The report body has a background image property. Note: page header and page footer are independent of the report body - but you can also use images in those page sections.
-- Robert|||Hello Robert,
thanks for the reply. I already Tryied these settings but I can't stretch the background image, just set the repeating style.
Since the report must be rendered as PDF only, how can I create a background image so that it fits perfctly to the resulting PDF ? I guess it depends on the DPI used in reporting services.
Thanks,
Pierre|||
Sorry, we don't have an option right now that would stretch the image.
If your image fits the physical page size (i.e. Report.PageSize - Report.Margins) at 96 dpi, it should also look fine then in PDF at higher resolutions.

Possible workaround is to use image that is big enough and set
BackgroundRepeat property to Repeat.

Background expression
Hi All,
I tried using the following Expression in a field's background property:
=iif( Fields!ProjectedDate.Value between (getdate()+1) and (getdate()+7), Orange ,White )
And then I got this message, anyone got any ideas?
The background color expression for the textbox 'textbox49' contains an error: [BC30455] Argument not specified for parameter 'FalsePart' of 'Public Function IIf(Expression As Boolean, TruePart As Object, FalsePart As Object) As Object'.
=iif( Fields!ProjectedDate.Value < (getdate()+1) AND Fields!ProjectedDate.Value > (getdate()+7), Orange ,White )
I dont think you can use between in expression.

Background Colour with null values
display one colour if the value is null and another if there is a value. The
data is an integer type and when using isdbnull the colour displayed for the
null value columns is the colour for a value, not the null colour. If am

I am using RS 2000 SP2Try using the VB.NET syntax of 'is nothing' instead of '=nothing'

Cell3 = Green
Cell4 = Green
for the 2nd row i need:
Cell1 = Yellow
Cell2 = Blue
Cell3 = Green
Cell4 = Green
for the third row in need:
Cell1 = Red
Cell2 = Yellow
Cell3 = Blue
Cell4 = Blue
and finally for the forth row i need:
Cell1 = Red
Cell2 = Red
Cell3 = Yellow
Cell4 = Yellow
Does anybody know a way setting these to the desired colours?

Thanks in advance,
Dave HuntDustpanDave,
According to the "Hitchhiker's Guide to SQL Reporting Services" book, page
433-436, you'll have to use RunningValue and CountDistinct within a Matrix.
They say:
1) Add a Row Gropu called RowColor and give it a grouping expression of "=1"
2) Find the textbox for RowColor and enter the expression
"=RunningValue(Fields!<columngroupname>.Value & Fields!<2ndColumnGroup>.Value
..., CountDistinct, Nothing)"
3) Then enter an expression into the background color for all of the fields
in question: "IIF(RunningValue(Fields!<ColumnGroupName>.Value &
Fields!<2ndColumnGroup>.Value & ..., CountDistinct, Nothing) mod 2, "Color1",
"Color1")
4) The ROWColor Textbox MUST remain visible (you can't hide it), but you can
shrink it's height, set the font to 1 pt, zero out your padding and/or set
the main Color property to the color of your background.
I hope this helps. I haven't done this in a Matrix yet. I've just used the
simpler format for table rows. The book is pretty decent and has helped me a
lot. I'd advise buying a copy, or at least buying a SQL RS book. Don't get
the one published by WROK, though. It's not the best of the available
material.

Background colour
if a question abot ms report server.
i have two fields ,
field1 : name = gender value = 1 for men and 2 for woman
field 2 : name = lastname value = for example "jenkins"
so what i want to do is if gender = 1 (men) then i want to set the background colour of the field2(name) blue
else (gender = 2) i want to set the background colour of the field2(name) red.
do anyone know how i could do this ??
i'am a "newcommer" in the world of reporting services ,i always used crystal report for creating my reports.
thanks
patrickHi,
Here is a trick but most of programmers do not recommend it (Me too).
You fire the query as
Select [Name]=(Case When Gender=1 then '<font style=''backgroundcolor:blue;''>' + lastname + '<font>' Else '<font style=''backgroundcolor:red;''>' + lastname + '<font>' End )
Remember this is not recommended but you can use it in urgency.
Regards,
Hemchand.|||
Hello:
Is Gender ALWAYS a 1 or a 2?
In the field (Field2:name=LastName) within Report Layout - Select Properties (Right Side under Solutions Explorer) -
Click on BackGround (you will get a down arrow and scroll and look for Expression - Expressions is always at the top of the list)
In the Expression Box enter the following:
=iif(Field!:Gender.Value = "1", "Blue", "Red")
I probably do not have your field named correctly but you can enter =iif(THEN SELECT YOUR FIELD FROM THE DATASET and then append the remainder of the above statement.
Hope this helps!
Best Regards,
Joe

I thought Debo was trying to read the BackColor property, and you cannot
read any property of a textbox except Value. Of course if you enter the name
of the color in words in a textbox, then you can do it, because you are
reading the Value property.

Background Color for SQL Server Management Console
Funnily enough, I was thinking along exactly the same lines as Jason. If no feature exists is it possible to do it programmatically, as an add-in? eg create an event handler that would set the background colour whenever a connection is made or changed, depending on the server or database connected to?

Background color for each first row in groups
group to be light gray, while the row below it are white. Any suggestions?
ThanksIt has been a little while since you posted this question, but I think I have
an answer I discovered while researching a solution to one of my problems.
The RowNumber aggregate function might be helpful to you. Try the following
somewhere in your report to verify this will help:
RowNumber("group_name")
Try concatinating that to a text field on the row you want the coloring to
ultimately be on; I believe you will find that the first record in each group
has a 1. Presuming it does give you a 1 where you want it to be, all you
need to do then is select the row in question, and place the following
expression in the Background Color field (or any othr formatting field, like
Font Weight or Font Style):
=IIF( RowNumber("group_name") = 1 , "Light Gray" , "White" )

Background color differences between Visual Studio & Reporting Services
I'm trying to deploy a report to Reporting Services, but I've found that there's a behaviour difference Visual Studio and Reporting Services with the Matrix control for the subtotals.
For the background color for the "textbox" on the cells, I've used the folowing expression:
=Iif(Fields!ID__vs_YAGO.Value < 1, "Red"
,Iif(Fields!ID__vs_YAGO.Value < 1.02, "Yellow"
,"GreenYellow"))
The individual cells alternate colors, based on the value in the cell. In Visual Studio, the Subtotal cells also alternate colors (which is correct). But when the report is deployed to Reporting Services, The Subtotal cells have a transparent background. (Incorrect).
If I set the same expression into the background setting for the Subtotal cells, the expression is evaluated once for the entire row and the entire row has the same color (different Subtotal lines will alternate). This is the same in both Visual Studio and Reporting Services.
I'm using SP2, 2005 (32 bit for Reporting Services). To ensure full compatibility, I've editted / deployed the report all on the same machine.
Does anyone know of this problem and how to resolve it?
Additional: In testing the various output formats, it seems to be a bug in the HTML rendering engine. PDF amd TIFF work fine. I believe Excel export uses either part of the HTML rendering engine or pieces of the same code base.
P.S. I'm detecting other reporting differences between Visual Studio and Reporting Services, such as how "null key records" (from Analysis Services) are handled in groups. Is there a compatibility list published somewhere?
I've been having the same issues. I have been pulling my hair out for weeks.
Things to add:
I noticed that when deployed to Reporting Services, if you export to a TIFF or PDF, you will get the intended result. However, displayed on the web, and when exported to excel, it gives the above problems.

Backgound update of FTI
inserts and updates which affect the indexed column occur. How can I tell if
an FTI on a column has been set for background updates?
Also, do you know if there is a performance downside to having background
updates enabled? Could you point me to any studies or papers where the pros
and cons of the different update strategies (background Vs Incremental Vs
Full) are explored?
If background updating is enabled, then from SQL Profiler how can I track
the queries being run for the updates and how long the updates are taking?
Thanks.

Some people prefer to schedule the updating of the indexing process to a
time when there is less activity on their system.
To tell if you are using update index in background issue a
select
objectproperty(object_id('authors'),'TableFullText BackgroundUpdateIndexOn')
where authors is the table you are interested in. A value of 1 will indicate
change tracking with update index in background.
